Stuff to get now, before the collapse

Hi folks, There was a great gathering at Paige's tonight. One thing we did tonight was have a brainstorm on the topic, "Stuff we should acquire now, before the economy collapses/ all hell breaks loose/ etc." This is not an exhaustive list, and the categories I used were off the top of my head (although I was tempted to consult the LC Classification System-- maybe I will, one of these days).Feel free to comment, add items, suggest categories, what have you. Just remember this was abrainstorm. In…See More

As a cooperative learning venture it would aim to:* emphasize collaborative process – away from traditional ‘education’* keep the process decentralized, informal, non-hierarchical* re-localize our economic life, withdraw from consumerist culture, simplify materially* inspire sharing of all our social currencies through reciprocity relationships* include cottage ‘industry’ activities with little money changing hands* cover the full range of our basic material needs; food and water, shelter,…See More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
Talking with folks in my town about starting the process - inviting participation of local community. I'm a beginner, just finished my first permaculture design course!! and the Transition handbook!! Yay!!!!
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
We need a better society, one which nurtures whole, healthy kids into whole healthy responsible adults. One piece of that is restructuring our society, so that more decision-making rests locally, with individuals, neighborhoods, towns and counties and fewer decisions are top-down, one-size-fits-all from the state and federal levels.

Then there's peak oil and climate change!!!!!
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I have the time and ability to plug in to where the need is, within the range of my gifts. I can be a speaker, facilitator, gardener, designer. I'm not the research, science translator. I am drawn to food security and cultural change.

Hi Valerie,

Just wanted to let you know about the Green Drinks event in Brattleboro
Thursday evening Nov 19th. More info at the link below.

For many years I have been a member of the BANG group (Brattlebro Area Natural
Builders Group) and thought that this Green Drinks Event would be a good place
to connect with like minds in the area to meet and discuss green
sustainability.

Green Drinks event on 11/19/09, Thursday 6-8 PM, Flat Street Pub,
Brattleboro,VT
http://www.greendrinks.org/index.php?country=USA&city=Brattleboro

In addition I have sent an invite out to these local groups (BANG, Green
Drinks, and Transition Vermont Brattleboro and Transition Mass)

Transition Vermont Group in Brattleboro
http://transitionvermont.ning.com/group/brattleboroarea

Possibly morphing these groups together and using the Transition or Facebook
template for communications between members might help to build membership and
participation in discussions and future events.

Just a thought.

Please RSVP me if you think you will be attending.

Hope you are all well and enjoying the brisk Fall weather.

Sincerely,

Jay Walsh

Hello Valerie,

It is good you ask, it encourages me to keep going for it. I have just arrived back from visiting my homeland, Hungary, so I haven't done much. I have heard, that the Pelham group has met once, and they are thinking to do it together with the Amherst people. I am working together with one member of that group, to get her on the bike. I just ordered an electric bike for that (I found a great price for $240 - there are some marvelous deals out there when companies are collapsing!). And I am working on setting up a Neighborhood Bicycle Resource Center. Only slightly related activities, but it seems, that the reachout part of the movement is challenging for me.
Anything by you?

Valerie,

Ben here, from the Newburyport initiative. Would you mind posting your Great Re-skilling list to the Massachusetts forum?

We need to get more communication going there and between us all so that we don't keep reinventing the wheel. I think your list here is very good and quite comprehensive. Something that can benefit every group. I also had a few things I wanted to add, but when I tried that was when I realized it isn't possible to leave notes on other Groups pages.

Cheers to a No Carbon Future!
