Welcome to Steve Chase's Profile

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I am currently the director of Antioch University New England's activist training program in Advocacy for Sustainability and Social Justice--which is a concentration within Antioch's master's program in Environmental Studies. Tranistion Initiatives have become a big part of our core curriculum. My partner Katy and I have already done a Transition Initiative training sponsored by Transition US and are in the planning stages of launching an Transition Initiative in Keene, New Hampshire. We also facilitate Awakening the Dreamer Symposiums, which are great outreach and awareness raising events for TT initiatives. We have already facilitated one day-long symposium for Transition Town White River Junction in Vermont. As one of the organizers put it, "The Symposium offers people the why, Transition Initiatives offer the how."
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
If we are serious about creating an environmentally sustainable, socially just, and spiritually fulfilling society we need to address the combined challenges of peak oil, climate disruption, and economic insecurity and injustice. While personal change and large-scale policy change are needed to make this transition, we will also need a deep, participatory, community-level effort at constructive change in how we collectively live, work, and play in all our home places. The Transition Movement offers some of the best theory, practice, and examples for this essential strand in the tapestry of the many social change efforts we need.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
My partner Katy and I can facilitate customized Awakening the Dreamer Symposiums (under any appropriate name) that directly serves the needs of Transition Initiatives. I can also popularize the movement via teaching, writing, and speaking. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I will make the effort to create an Initiative in my own town of Keene, New Hampshire, in the new year.

Two books that I think add a lot to the theory and practice of the Transition Movement are:

Be The Change: How To Get What You Want In Your Community by Thomas Linzey (with Anneke Campbell)

The Bridge at the Edge of the World: Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability by James Gustave Speth

Best!

Hey Steve,
When I chatted with Katy at the Training she said she knew of permaculture courses in the neighborhood that are given spread out over time. Could you ask her to forward me the info as she gets it? Thanks!

Please consider registering Antioch at http://transitionus.ning.com/groups/group/listByLocation?location=Colleges%20and%20Universities -- a great place to make the environmental program visible nationally. Let me know if you have questions.
