Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I am not involved yet
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I believe in the need to restructure our lives in response to the growing scarcity of easy energy, changes in global climate, and the failure of our economic system. I believe that everyone must get invloved, no matter who they are.

There have been several times in my life where I have had experiences that have changed my understanding of something in a fundamental way. As an engineer, I am a problem solver. To solve problems, it is important for me to be able to gather and analyze data to look for trends and keys to dependencies. These are the “smoking guns” that hint of relationships not yet discovered. In fact, to this end, I’ve become a fan of statistics and logic. In this day and age, it is extremely important that one can separate the good information from the bad information and the disinformation. Having grown up in the 60’s and 70’s, I have always been aware of our dependence on oil, but always considered it secondary to the “problems of the day”. I was young and beginning a life. Working hard, I received my BS in 1984 from Western New England College, and became a key engineer in one of the most forward looking companies in the nation at the time.

Always on the lookout for trends, I was active at the beginning of the housing bubble in the 1980’s (at the same time). When it was clear that the housing bubble was unsustainable (a word that was unknown to me then), I liquidated before things got too bad. I was making all the right moves at all the right times…

Then came the gulf wars and 911. The reality of that time made me really begin to observe how America existed in relation to the rest of the world. Once I really began to notice the trends, I did not like what I was seeing, but all the pieces were not yet in place. I could not understand why we were over there. It was like another Vietnam – only there were no protests. Why were people in Europe so upset with us??
Finally, in 2007, I was flipping through the TV channels, and came across Chris Martenson on public TV. For 3 solid hours, I was glued to the TV. Here was a highly qualified person, on a respected television network, giving me what appeared to be good data that basically pointed to the end of our civilization as we know it – or at least the potential end. This also came on the heels of the “inconvenient truth” of global warming. The information contained in these two bodies of data, when combined, was potentially catastrophic. I needed to check, and I needed to act.
So here I am...
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I have many talents, but mostly I'm not afraid to work with my hands - I don't consider it beneath me. I'm NABCEP certified for PV solar, and have a certificate in RE/EE from GCC. I have a Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering with concentrations in Statistical Methods and Manufacuring Engineering. I'm currently a member of CoOp Power and have helped out on many installations, a member of the Western Mass Green Consortium and I have helped out there, and NESEA. I strongly believe in maintaining a holistic approach to transition. As part of the natural system, it's important that we fit well into it.

Plans for Belchertown group sound good - we live at the end of Amherst off Route 9 very close to B-town, so we'd want to be part of your group.  Alice
