Surveillance cameras in downtown Newburyport- do you think it effects the feeling of community?

"I live 1 block from downtown, I shop in downtown, and spying cameras are not what I want my tax money to go toward. Lets put our tax money into growing edible gardens on city property to help feed Newburyport. Lets build strong communities so that…"

As I understand, part of "Transition Town" is envisioning what your city or town could look and feel like. How do you want it to be. There are many things about Transition that I'm excited to be involved with. Community building is something I hope to see come out of the collective effort. In my mind, surveillance cameras just don't feel right. To me it imposes this sense that we're all suspect until proven innocent. And we have to be proven every time we walk down the street. Anyone up for…See More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
From the outskirts. I had a bit of a 'behinds the scenes' look as the initiating group formed and hit the ground running. In the past it was always fun to brainstorm with Ben creative ways we could really get the word out about TT. (I still think we need to implement a few of those ideas too!) Now I'd like to be actively involved, whether it's with food, or pushing for our town to grow sustainably. I'd like to be involved with awareness raising.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I love the idea of 'going local' in all aspects of our lives. What strikes me about TT is that by addressing 3 major issues they take a very holistic approach- making the task of bettering our lives possible.

One thing that has particularly caught me, is the idea of 're-skilling.' Several generations ago people were much more capable of self sustaining. Now a days, if it can't be bought we usually just stop and scratch our heads. THAT scares me. We need to recapture this basic knowledge.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I'm still feeling this part out. Being in architecture, I'm naturally drawn towards pushing for sustainability and smarter city planning. I'm also on the Conservation Comm. The resistance to sustainable building by many people is impressive, but I feel it has a lot to do with misinformation. On a grand level I'd like to see City Planning incorporating sustainable by-laws. On a realistic level I think people need to be educated in what is possible. They need to be inspired to think more is possible. I'd like to help with this.
