TimeBanking

A number of people at the Regional meeting brought up the topic of time banking. We in the Newburyport area are in the process of setting up a new time bank. We have been looking at the TImeBanksUSA model and reviewing the information resources on their website. I wondered if any of you are currently managing a timebank and if so, if you could share what resources you used in starting up and lessons learned. Thanks,ElizabethSee More

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I have read the Transition Handbook and attended an organizational meeting of the Hamilton-Wenham transition group. I am educating myself and plan to be involved in initiating the transition movement in the city of Newburyport.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I have long been interested in environmental issues but was unaware of the Peak Oil phenomena. I believe that the Transition movement gives us a mechanism to be actively involved in our own local communities to make meaningful changes that will improve the environment and prepare us for a non or greatly reduced fossil fuel world.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement?
I plan to educate myself and others and to help in the formation of the transition movement in my city.

Thank you Elizabeth for your kind words! We too went to the Laurie Hammel event, which is where we got our fire lit, so to speak, for Amesbury First. In fact, Laurie was more than happy to help us along the way and made several trips from Boston to attend our meetings. He really walks the talk! My daughter Ashley, who is a Transition member, designed the logo and the Amesbury First website.

I am very excited about being a part of this group and look forward to meeting everyone. I do believe we met before... a very long time ago when you listed a unit on Barton Street (if that was you)... I was your realtor.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Kindest Regards,
Nancy

HI Elizabeth,
Thanks for your message! Yes, I am familiar with the Beverly group. They have some amazing people! Right now I think they are in a bit of a holding pattern. We'll see what the future holds.
I attended Training for Transition this weekend in Durham, NH and it was amazing!! My next step is to try and get the ball rolling again here in Hamilton-Wenham.
I wonder, what were the first outreach events you held? What was most successful?

Hi Elizabeth,
I did hear about Transition NBPT from Christina. I moved back to the area this past November after working for the MA Audubon Boston Nature Center. I was a teacher naturalist and worked with children aged 4-17 in Boston Public Schools and on site. The article you sent me really connected to the work I did in Boston. A lot of our work focused on gardening, stewardship and connecting children with nature. One part of the article says something along the lines of not putting the weight of what's happening to the environment on children, but to focus more on the solution. I really agree with this and believe it is true for adults too!
I was glad to hear about Transition NBPT and am excited to learn more! At this point, I'm not sure where my interests lay, but I think I'll start by attending one of the movies. Thanks for the comment and I look forward to meeting you!

Hey, well all of the currents projects you listed sounded great! I just recently returned home from an environmental leadership camp with the Student Sierra Coalition, and one night we had a whole presentation on peak oil and then permaculture. I'm so interested in continuously learning new things, so I have no specific issues I would like to focus on. Unfortunatly, as excited as I was for the farmers' market, I always work sundays so I have been unable to go. This is probably why I had not heard of Transition Newburyport yet. I also just recently have been reading more about oct. 24, and 350, and would love to help out in any way. With the high school enviro club, I would really like to work on trying to get composting, and in addition, biodegradable trays, replacing the styrofoam ones. It's a work in progress, but I would love to get the school involved with Transition Newburyport also.

Hi Elizabeth
I heard about you AT the Farmers' Market. I was there for the first time and walking around I found your booth.
I'm not sure how to get involved, but figured a journey of 1000 miles starts with one step, so here's my first step.
I am happy to learn more and do my part..
Thanks for getting in touch.
