Hi everyone,
I just posted a new event for a first Transition Meeting in Wayland, MA on 19 September. You can read the invite here: http://transitionmassachusetts.ning.com/events/transition-wayland-ma-and
We're looking for speakers and "guides" who have started and attended Transition Initiatives and Trainings. Please let me know if you are interested in meeting with me ahead of time and/or coming to the meeting to share your experience.
Thanks!
Katrien

Hi Jen, the thought of approval actually never crossed my mind. It was just awareness-raising. It sounded like the city was doing some stuff that would be useful for transition and so it seemed natural to make the connection, as i would with any other Somerville resident who was talking about something transition-related. But I get that we wouldn't want to be co-opted by political figures for their own purposes.

Which makes me wonder: do we say no if someone who holds a govt office wants to join? Or say yes, but not in your official capacity? Or something else?

Julia P, I would try not getting the political people involved yet. We do not need their approval of our group yet as we are working from the ground up.
However I am thinking of writing something for ArtBeat as well and hope others in this group contribute

The theme for this year's ArtBeat is "Somerville...Of the Future". The deadline for community organizations to sign up for a booth is June 5 and it costs $75. I don't know if we'll be far enough along by the next meeting to feel like we wanted to do something like that, but it would certainly be a way to reach a whole lot of people.

Althea and I went to the Ward 6 Resistat meeting this week. Seems like there a lot of things the city is doing now that relate to Transition, such as creating/improving bike paths and bike lanes and working on a new community garden along the current bike path (although there are soil contamination & drainage problems). Apparently the city has a bicycle committee and we met the person in charge of it, Steve Winslow.

Also the city is "prepar[ing] a comprehensive plan for its future" now. It's called SomerVision: Trends in Somerville and a series of informational sessions are being held now through Sept. on various aspects. Here's more: http://www.somervillema.gov/NewsDetail.cfm?instance_id=1458

We also mentioned the Transition Initiative to our Alderman (Alderperson? Alderwoman? What is the correct terminology?) Rebekah Gewirtz and the mayor.

A friend and I were walking along the bike path today around 3:30pm. At the edge of the fence near Altitude (a product dvlpmt company), there was a woman who was beautifying weeded the edges of the fence and had planted some perennials and annuals. Just a really nice sign of life.
